Pretty woodland walk, although the sound of traffic on the busy Forder Valley Road is constant. Current long term roadworks restrict some access and if you're coming in from Sheepstor Road, be aware the entrance offers a steep descent for walkers into the valley.

Woods have been on this site for at least a thousand years - mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Today Active Neighbourhoods and Plymouth City Council manage this area for nature. Parts of the woodland are coppiced hazel and spindle - full of bright berries at the moment - perfect habitat for dormice. Elsewhere is broadleaved woodland. The mix of 2 types of woodland creates habitat for many different species of bird. A rough grassland clearing is often visited by hunting birds of prey. This clearing also houses a fantastic children's play area, and a wildlife pond - home to newts, minnows, frogs, dragonflies. Parts of the grassland are managed to support fritillary butterflies - silver washed fritillaries are found here. A stream flows through the valley. Trails and stepping stones have been laid around here for children to explore - my friend's sons were in heaven. In places older trees are multistemmed - appearing to have been coppiced many years ago by earlier populations who managed these woods. There are many species of wildlife in these woods, including, woodpeckers, small coppers, common blue butterflies, Plymouth pear, many species of moss and lichen in this ancient woodland.

Great 45minute - 60 minute loop walk. Doesn't get too busy as not much place to park. This is good! Small stream, and lots of trees and a couple of small fields for dogs to run through. Lots of things for them to sniff but not too much wildlife to chase which is good! Just wish it was more wheelchair/ pram friendly

What a lovely place! Nature at it's best! With a little money spent on a couple of well positioned benches it could be magical!!
