It's not a big church but yes it is impressive

Front porch was under renovation and bar the wrought iron bell tower the front of the Cathedral is relatively simple, only 2 or 3 gargoyles on the front hint at what lies within. The cathedral is dark, long and broad with short arms for the normal cruciform layout, but the surprise is the sections/vaults along the left and right of the main body. Each section is about 10 feet wide and contains a dedicated altar or area for a particular dedication to a Saint or similar. Some are highly ornate in gilded wood or plaster, some held carved stone, marble or paintings. Everywhere paintings added to the depth and quality, bare stone walls were a rarity. Wonderful to explore

The cathedral is jaw dropping. Our pet monkey had to sit down.... it was really quite overwhelming.

I visit every Cathedral I can so this had to be on the to-do list today. Usual colourful and long established Catholic fare although not a patch on Bayonne where we visited last week. Alongside the Castle/Palace at the south of the City centre, this is one of the key places to visit in a fairly average centre. Gardens by the river are also worth a butcher's.

Still under renovation (front porch) during our visit but one can easily go inside either to light a candle and pray or just to marvel on it's interior.

As cathedrals go it is smaller than many. However that is no criticism. It has ambience in bucket loads. The exterior tells you you're about to enter a real church. St John The Babtist. You may acquire a love of old churches here. The stained glass. The light. The many small chapels.
