A great place to visit especially if you are exploring the various WW1 museums
Tons of information around the role Nieuwport and its sluises played in ww1. The staff is super friendly and all places can also easily be reached with a wheelchair. Only downside is that one of the projector for their large panorama movie projection is broken, and so you cannot see all of the information. BUT I am pretty sure that they are going to repair that soon. :)
Again, one of the further flung places to go. We arrived via the coastal tram that runs the length of the Belgian coast (which for 14 gives you a day ticket which allows you to hop on and off where ever you like). The west front in Nieuwpoort is only five minutes walk from the main tram stop in the town. It its own right, it is a grand monument, which affords good views of the town from the top. The fit can use the 180 or so steps, the bone idle can use the lift. The visitor centre is fascinating in that it gives a very detailed account of the town's role in WW1, in particular how the lock gates were opened during WW1 to flood the polders thus preventing the German forces from advancing. In addition, it gives some insight into the rebuilding of the town after the war. There are also a number of images from 'Ye Berlyn Tapestrie' - the highly amusing satirical work by John Hassall. As ever, we didn't really allow enough time, and it has gone our list of mut do again.
Well worth a visit, easily accessible by car as well as by the Coast tram. As well as the museum one can go to the top of the tower for a good view of the lock system and surrounding countryside. In the early weeks of WW1 the whole area was deliberately inundated by flood water from the sea in order to prevent the German Army from advancing West along the coast in their attempt to take the Channel ports and cut off the Allied Armies.
A bit expensive for what it is. No way you can spend more than an hour in the museum.
Worth a visit if you are here
