This monument stands in tribute to Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, an18th century German writer and dramatist. His legacy includes the separation of poetry writing techniques techniques from painting popular at the time as well as his play, Nathan the Wise, that pleads for religious tolerance. The monument features a life like statue of Lessing seated dressed as a gentleman of the 19th century. His left arm is draped over the back of the chair and holding a book with his left hand. There's is a great amount of detail showing his attire especially on his jacket and the 18th century necktie. The monument stands at the centre of Gansemarkt public square where once stood an opera house where he worked. The monument is off the main tourist circuit in Hamburg, but worth a look if you have time to visit the Gansemarkt.

Sehr nett gestaltet.
